Peering policy

In order to broaden and enrich the experience for members who are connected to our network, REANNZ allows the connection of Service and Content Providers (CaSPs) to the network. This policy describes the objectives we have in connecting providers, and outlines the key principles that should be followed to ensure resulting services and content are consistent with REANNZ’s architecture and principles.

REANNZ is willing to enter into settlement-free peering with CaSPs. REANNZ will be guided by any matter it considers relevant in accepting CaSPs requests for connection to our network as a settlement free peer; these include certain conditions:

  • New Zealand RE&I community organisations are members of REANNZ, and cannot be settlement-free peers.
  • The peering should be of mutual interest and benefit for REANNZ, its members and the CaSP.
  • Peering can be established on any of the public exchange points where REANNZ is present, or as a private network interconnect.
    • If the traffic on a private network interconnection reaches such a high level it begins to impact performance, both parties should immediately start planning for an upgrade of the connection.
    • If the traffic on a public exchange point reaches such a high level that it may impede other traffic, steps should be taken to remedy the situation.
  • The peering configuration should be technically sound, and be in accordance with best practices.
  • Peering agreements are valid as long as neither party cancels the agreement. Under normal circumstances REANNZ will provide 30 days notice before cancelling.
  • REANNZ may without risk of financial or other penalty unilaterally decide to cancel a peering agreement if any of the conditions here are violated.
  • REANNZ does not peer with commercial Internet Service Providers.
  • REANNZ is an RE&I internetwork and therefore cannot carry transit traffic between non-members, commercial networks and/or CaSPs.

REANNZ’s interest in peering is influenced by the expected level and symmetry of the resulting traffic, the potential for reducing cost, adding value, and improving performance etc. for REANNZ members.

Requests for setting up new peerings with REANNZ should be sent to peering@reannz.co.nz. By setting up a peering with REANNZ, the peer is seen to have accepted this peering policy.
