KAREN serves thousands of researchers and educators, from Crown research institutes, universities, libraries, schools, polytechnics, museums and private sector partners across New Zealand through a series of 16 Points of Presence, or PoPs.
The ring-shaped core network has a capacity of 10 Gigabits per second and is resilient, meaning network traffic has an alternative path if one side of the ring breaks. This ensures your data will always get through.
Work is underway right now to expand the reach of KAREN through the addition of new PoPs and regional spurs. This will bring the number of PoPs to 23 by October 2010, and extend our reach to Warkworth and Invercargill. (The 1Gbps connectivity to Warkworth has been completed, and that to Tekapo is imminent).
KAREN also connects with similar high-speed national research and education networks across the world, through international connection to Sydney and Seattle, and through them networks in Asia and Europe.
Our international network extends all the way to Sydney and Seattle. From our PoP in the North Shore we connect to Sydney via two 155 Megabit per second links and to Seattle at 622 Megabits per second. Following our network refresh, from December 2010 we will have 1Gb/s connectivity to Sydney and Los Angeles.
At our landing points at Sydney and Seattle, KAREN connects with over 50 similar research and education networks across the world, giving you access to millions of people and resources without data charges.
