This section is where you'll find information on services, tools, trials and projects available on KAREN, provided by REANNZ and KAREN members and partners.

These services, trials and projects will help you access more and better content and resources over KAREN.


Projects: current

KAREN connectivity and services RFPs

REANNZ has released four Request for Proposals (RFPs) for KAREN connectivity and related network services.

National Education Network trial

REANNZ has begun extending the NEN trial to another 200 schools. The extended trial will run until at least June 2011 and will provide schools with very fast, unrestricted broadband at 100Mb/s or greater.

ITP Connect project

This project will connect even more Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) to KAREN, supported by funding from the Tertiary Education Commission.

Remote site connectivity project

The government has provided funding to assist at least two remote Core Member sites connect to KAREN.


Services: current

KAREN video conferencing bridge service

Collaborate in real-time or view a streamed conference using the KAREN video conferencing bridge.

Video conferencing helpdesk

AVCC provides a video conferencing helpdesk, advisory and support service to help KAREN members get the best experience of video conferencing.

KAREN NOC services (PoC)

This suite of open source tools will provide more visibility of the operation and performance of the network to members. These tools will help network technicians to troubleshoot and measure network performance. (This site is only accessible to KAREN members).

BeSTGRID

Gird computing tools, services and advice for New Zealand researchers. BeSTGRID also offer an online research space (Sakai) and host an EVO server - a collaboration tool with audio, video, instant messaging and file sharing tools.

e-cast

e-cast education deliver content streaming and distribution services to the education and research sector over KAREN.

Ultranet

The Ultranet learning management system is accessible to teachers over KAREN.

e-asTTle

e-asTTle is an online learning and assessment tool for New Zealand primary school teachers and is accessible over KAREN.


Services and projects: completed

KAREN experience programme

This programme offered free KAREN membership to institutes of technology, polytechnics (ITPs) and wānanga for the 2008 calendar year in exchange for trial projects enabled by KAREN.
