School network backbone

Architecture, operational and commercial standards and information on our network for responders to the managed network component of the Ministry of Education’s schools broadband RFI.

Findings from the National Education Network Trial

The Ministry of Education has released a “Request for Information” about the provision of a Managed Ultra-fast Broadband Network and Managed Network Services for schools. REANNZ is delighted that the National Education Network trial run over our network has been able to progress ultra-fast broadband for schools to this outcome.

Some key learnings have emerged from the trial:

• The Ministry has identified the need to provide schools a managed network and managed services package.
• REANNZ has identified that it is best placed to design and provide core network backbone, with connections to the rest of the country’s education and research sectors and variety of specialist content providers.

RFI responders are encouraged to use our network

Our network is not a managed network as asked for in this RFI.

It is, however, designed to be neutral, open and collaborative. It allows any connectivity and service provider to connect and provide service to schools in an open manner through the use of industry standards and neutral interconnect points. We supports collaboration between any parties, large or small, for the benefit of the research and education community.

Responders to the managed network component of the RFI are encouraged to make use of our netwrok as their core network backbone.

Information pack for responders

Rather than partner with any single responder, REANNZ has produced an information pack that contains relevant architecture, operational and commercial standards and information. REANNZ will be offering the supplier community information briefings on our network to support their RFI responses.
