    The AUT radio telescope at Warkworth is now connected to KAREN. This will allow New Zealand to demonstrate its capability in radio astronomy, and could enable New Zealand to take part in the global radio astronomy project, the Square Kilometre Array.

    KAREN’s global connectivity expanded

    KAREN’s international network capacity between Australia and New Zealand has been doubled in capacity in response to Member demand.

    REANNZ has signed an agreement with Verizon Business to double KAREN’s current international network capacity between Australia and New Zealand from 155Mb/s to 310Mb/s.

    The Close Up programme at TVNZ aired an inspiring story about the students from Point England school on 27 February 2009. To these students, using learning tools such as blogging, podcasting and cloud computing are second nature.

    Media release: Important reports on schools’ broadband network released

    Two important reports have just been released on a successful trial that provided rural and urban schools with fast and unrestricted broadband to empower teaching and learning.


    The National Education Network (NEN) trial provided 20 schools with fast, unrestricted broadband drastically improving their access to information and communication technology tools. The trial was led by REANNZ and funded by the Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education Commission and the National Library.

  • $2.6m for advanced networking

    REANNZ has awarded over $2.6 million to ten projects in the first round of its Working Group and Development Fund. This fund is aimed at developing capability around the use of KAREN and advanced networking techniques.

    The ten successful projects are led by eight KAREN member organisations, including five universities and three Crown research institutes, and span the fields of e-research, microbiology, earthquake engineering, bioinformatics, grid computing and the social sciences.
