CBF Criteria

Funding criteria, guidelines and examples of the types of activities that the Capability Build Travel and Event Fund may support to help you make your application.

2010 Capability Build Travel and Event Fund - open

The 2010 Capability Build Travel and Event Fund encourages applications from core KAREN members (universities and Crown research institutes) to support their eResearch and KAREN capability building efforts. The purpose of this fund is to provide funding for travel and events that demonstrate the value of collaboration on KAREN, networking technologies and the applications and services for which they are used. All applications must be aligned to the Goals of the CBF.

These grants are funded by a limited amount of money and will be awarded quickly. Recognition of sponsorship and a willingness to share the benefits of the funding is expected. Applications will be considered on an ongoing basis. The fund closes when all of the funds have been awarded - we expect this will be about 20 awards.

REANNZ requires award winners to write a report of their travel or event as a wiki contribution on their Member page and be available to share what was learned with the wider KAREN community, for example via a video conference.

Travel applications

Travel applications can be made to help fund attendance at national and international eResearch events that support eResearch and KAREN capability building. Travel funding applications may not exceed $7,500 (excluding GST).

Examples of potential eResearch travel destinations (not a full list):

  • APAN (Asia Pacific Advanced Network) Conference
  • eResearch Australasia
  • PRAGMA
  • Internet2 Member meetings

  • Overseas Advanced Networks
  • New Zealand eResearch events
  • Overseas technical workshops or camps

Event applications

Event applications can be made that help fund the visiting of international experts and costs for Member-led events that promote eResearch and KAREN usage within and across KAREN members. Event applications shall not exceed $10,000 (excluding GST).

Some examples of activities that could be funded include:

  • Keynote presenter travel, accommodation, fees
  • Event equipment, venue hire, catering, promotion

Before you make an application

Here's some simple points to consider before making an application:

  • Check your eligibility. Are you an employee of a core KAREN Member (university or CRI)? Does your application fit within the financial boundaries of the fund?
  • Review the Goals of the CBF. Does your travel or event align to use goals? Does your travel or event build skills in eResearch or the use of KAREN?
  • Review the application form. How well does your travel or event met the assessment criteria?
  • Is your organisation able to make a financial contribution to your travel or event? Matching funding is not required, but is encouraged.

Submitting your application

Applications will be considered on an ongoing basis. The fund closes when all of the funds have been awarded. To submit your application:

  1. Complete the application form (below)
  2. Email your completed application form and a copy of your CV to Bill Choquette (bill.choquette@reannz.co.nz)
